Electric Oven Not Working? Try These Checks First

If your oven isn't heating properly, these quick checks can sometimes identify a simple cause before you need an engineer.

Electric Oven repair by Ipswich Appliance Repairs

4 Things To Check Yourself First

These simple checks take a couple of minutes and could save you a call-out — or help our engineer diagnose the fault faster if you do book a repair.

1

Check The Circuit Breaker / Fuse

An oven that won't power on at all may simply have tripped a circuit breaker or blown a fuse — check your consumer unit before assuming the oven itself has failed.

2

Check The Clock / Timer Setting

Many ovens won't heat if the clock or timer has been left in a delay or auto-cook setting. Check the display isn't showing a timer symbol and reset the clock if needed.

3

Check The Door Is Closing Fully

A door that isn't closing properly — due to a worn seal or something trapped in it — can stop the oven heating correctly or cause uneven cooking.

4

Check For Visible Element Damage

If you can see the heating element, check for any obvious scorch marks, blistering or a visible break — a clear sign it needs replacing.

Still not working after these checks? That's completely normal — it just means the fault needs a proper diagnosis. Give us a call with the brand, model and what you've already tried.
